Julie Gross Gelfand Elected President of IABC-LI, Receives Achievement in Communications Award
6.17.2009 - Julie Gross Gelfand, Executive Vice President and Director of Public Relations at Harrison Leifer DiMarco (HLD), has been elected president of the International Association of Business Communicators - Long Island Chapter (IABC-LI), effective July 1. The Long Beach resident also received the chapter’s 2009 award for Achievement in Communications. A member since 2002, Gelfand was elected to the Board of IABC-LI last June and previously served as an IABC program panelist.
IABC-LI is an organization of communications professionals dedicated to the education and professional development of its members, networking among colleagues and the advancement of their profession. Headquartered in San Francisco, IABC is a global professional organization representing over 16,000 members in 60 chapter countries.
“In her first year on the Board, Julie’s passion and commitment were immediately self-evident. Her ability to lead and to rally support among her colleagues pointed to Julie as an excellent candidate to head the Board next year,” said Claire Meirowitz, Principal of Professional Editing Services and Chair of the IABC-LI Nominating Committee.
The Achievement in Communications Award is given to a Long Island communications professional who exhibits exceptional skill, enthusiasm and commitment to the field of business communications. With this award, IABC-LI honors an individual whose exemplary skills and talents make him or her a role model for business communicators on Long Island.
“An articulate and impassioned communicator, Julie’s trademark is nosing out the public relations opportunity for a client’s product or service and devising a strategy that combines the right message with the right audience in the right balance with other elements of the marketing mix,” said Ann Middleman, Principal of ADM Marketing & Research Consulting, who chaired the Awards Committee.
Gelfand was recruited by HLD in 1997 to build a full-service public relations division at the agency. In the years since, she has helped establish HLD as one of the region’s most highly respected agencies with a roster of international, national and local clients. Previously, she served as Public Relations Director for a national humanitarian organization; Account Executive for a global public relations agency; and Public Relations Manager for a Wall Street financial exchange. Gelfand is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and a member of PRSA’s Counselor’s Academy. Charter membership on the Client Public Relations Committee of the American Association of Advertising Agencies is one of her favorite other current professional commitments. A 2008 class member of Long Island Business News’ Top 50 Most Influential Women, Gelfand is a frequent speaker and regularly publishes in professional and business journals. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Barnard College at Columbia University.
